UNILEITE - União das Cooperativas Agrícolas de Lacticínios da Ilha de São Miguel, UCRL, was formed in 1954 to respond to the crisis that São Miguel’s Agriculture was going through. It aimed to create a milk processing unit, which would guarantee the producers’ less dependence on companies.
Born during the agricultural crisis, UNILEITE was de-capitalized, a condition that conditioned its activity throughout many troubled years, culminating in its near bankruptcy in November 1991. However, it was saved by a new direction and it had the unconditional support of its producers, managing to stabilize its financial situation and achieve the dynamics that characterize it today.
With favourable financial conditions, a Business Project appeared in the form of a cooperative, which began with the construction of the new Industrial Unit of Arribanas and that continued in a succession of Projects of Modernization and Development of its structures and its activity.
Unileite has thus become a credible organization for its producers and economic agents in general. Located in the heart of the largest milk basin in the Azores and focused on taking advantage of the conditions of excellence that the Azorean nature has to offer, Unileite bet on the development of an integrated project in the milk market.
Always preserving nature, it is possible to share the best dairy products at the table, with milk from cows that graze freely using the most advanced technology.
The milk that is produced is unique and of excellent quality, since it enters the production lines practically after the milking of the cows that graze freely in the pastures of São Miguel Island.
Unileite produces milk, "flamengo" cheese, island cheese and butter, holding the Nova Açores, São Miguel, Famoso, Unileite Leite dos Açores and Mic Mac brands.
